The Voice winner named in live final/must visit

6 April 2014 Last updated at 01:20 Jermain Jackman, 19, is the first male winner of The Voice on BBC One

Jermain Jackman has been crowned the winner of BBC talent show The Voice.

The 19-year-old Londoner landed a major record deal after coming top in the public vote after the live final.

His final performances were Miley Cyrus hit Wrecking Ball and Pure Imagination, from the 1971 film Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory. He performed the latter with his coach will.i.am.

Jermain beat Sally Barker, Christina Marie and Jamie Johnson to win the third series of the BBC One show.

He told viewers afterwards: "I want you guys to know, work hard for your dream and you will achieve it."

He had been the bookmakers' outsider going into the final, with William Hill making him the 9-1 fourth favourite.

During the series, the young Labour Party activist had revealed his ultimate ambition - to become "the first singing black prime minister" and he was shown meeting Labour leader Ed Miliband at a radio studio.

Mr Miliband was quick to tweet his "huge congratulations" after Jermain's victory, telling him: "Knew you were an incredibly special singer from the first time I heard you."

Jermain put his head in his hands in disbelief as his name was announced by host Marvin Humes. He then embraced runners-up Sally and Christina, who had been left as his final opponents after Jamie was voted off first.

At the start of each series of The Voice, all the contestants have to sing to the four celebrity coaches, who sit with their backs to the stage.

Jermain performed Jennifer Hudson's And I'm Telling You in his initial audition but it was only on the final note of the song that will.i.am turned round in his chair to select him.

At that stage, Jermain explained that he had previously met the Black Eyed Peas singer at a music festival and, after a short conversation, the American superstar encouraged him to apply for the next series of The Voice.

In the final, he chose to sing And I'm Telling You again when contestants were invited to repeat their favourite performance from the series. This time, will.i.am was dancing on his chair and applauding from the start.

"I want to be down with you for the rest of your career", his coach told him.

The show's previous winners were Leanne Mitchell, whose first single entered the charts at number 45, and Andrea Begley, whose debut peaked at number 30.
