Life for teen who killed father must visit

Sean Hackett, 19, was cleared of murdering his father, Aloysius, 60, at their family home in Augher in 2013.


Instead, he was convicted of manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility.


The judge said that Hackett posed a significant risk and danger to the public for an unpredictable time.


He sentenced Hackett to life imprisonment with a minimum term of ten years to be served before he can be considered for parole.


He was also convicted on two charges of having a gun and ammunition with intent to endanger life.


The former Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) footballer had always admitted killing his father, whom he shot twice in the head, in the driveway of their Aghindarrah Road family home in Augher, on 4 January 2013.


But he had denied murdering his father, who was a former chairman of St Macartan's GAA in Augher.

In their verdict the jury of six women and six men accepted the defence case that Hackett, was a mentally disturbed, deluded teenager on the possible verge of schizophrenia when he killed the father he professed to have loved.


The trial was described as one of the most extraordinary and complex criminal cases ever to come before the courts.

Pupil killed in school wall collapse/must visit

Liberton High School The Scottish Ambulance Service sent a special operation response team to Liberton High School A pupil has died after a wall inside an Edinburgh school collapsed and landed on top of her.


The Scottish Ambulance Service sent a special operation response team to Liberton High School at 09:53.


A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Police in Edinburgh responded to Liberton High School after a wall within the building collapsed, injuring a female pupil at 10:00.


"She was treated by ambulance staff on the scene, but was pronounced dead."


He added: "Inquiries into the full circumstances surrounding this incident are ongoing and we are working alongside our relevant partner agencies."

'Tragic and troubling'

An Edinburgh City Council spokeswoman said: "A pupil at Liberton High School has sadly died following an incident at the school.


"Senior education staff and Health and Safety officers from the council are at the school providing support to staff and pupils.


"An updated statement on behalf of the school will be issued later."


Nick Cook, Conservative councillor whose Liberton and Gilmerton ward includes Liberton High School, told the BBC Scotland news website: "This is a very tragic and troubling incident.


"My thoughts are with the pupil's family.


"Serious questions need to be asked of the children and families department about how this has come about and a full investigation must be launched."

'Dreadful news'

Ian Murray MP tweeted: "Tragic news coming from Liberton High School. My thoughts go out to the family and all at the school. Dreadful news."


Edinburgh City Council was fined £8,000 in February after a pupil received serious injuries when she fell down a lift shaft at Liberton High School.


Morgan Seaton, a fourth year Liberton High School pupil, was 15 at the time of the accident on 8 December 2011.


Another pupil at the school died in December while playing for Tynecastle FC's under-14s.


The 13-year-old collapsed during a match at Saughton Sports complex in Edinburgh on 22 December.
