Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown has made his first speech against Scottish independence, as part of the Better Together campaign. Speaking at Glasgow University, he said it was vital to continue to "share risks and resources" across Britain. He said Scottish pensions would be more secure and cheaper to administer if Scotland remained in the UK, at a time when pensioner numbers in Scotland were rising fast.
However Dr Eilidh Whiteford, the SNP's pensions spokeswoman, said Mr Brown's claims were "ludicrous".
