Seth Rogen is surprised that more people don't hate him

Seth Rogen has portrayed a great many man-children in his career, but few adults. That changes somewhat with "Neighbors," which finds Rogen playing a 32-year-old Marshal father who, along with his wife (Rose Byrne), begins warring with the college fraternity that moves in next door.

"I kid of played idiots for years and years and years, so [being an adult] didn't really sink in that much," Rogen told HuffPost entertainment during a recent interview. "But I'm happy to make a movie where I'm able to play someone who is going through the same stuff I'm going through, but still has the I sense of humor that is like, which is infantile and stupid."

Rogen's comedic perspective courses through "neighbors" (out may 9), which includes jokes about dildos, weed and his weight. It's not a total surprise, despite the fact that he isn't credited with writing the script: Roe - who is married (to actress Lauren Anne Miller), but not a father - produced the Nicholas Stoller comedy. It now stands as the third film to arrive in theater via Point Grey Pictures, a company ROE started with Evan Goldberg, his long time friend and collaborator, and James Weaver. (A fourth film "The Interview," which Rogen co-directed with Goldberg, and so stars in with James Franco, is out later this year.)

In person, ROE is as affable and funny as one might imagine — his signature laugh is never far from the conversation - but he's so thoughtful, attentive and attuned to what makes a comedy work. Ahead, Roe discusses his duty as a producer, the reactions to the "bound 2" parody video he made with James Franco and why he of surprised people still like him.

This movie really feels like it's in your voice, even though you weren't the writer. As a producer, how much time did you and Evan put into the script?
We worked on it a lot. We had the writers [Andrew J. Cohen and Brendan O'Brien], re-write it a lot. We sat with them, literally in a room for weeks and weeks on end. We went through things and questioned everything. It's a very collaborative process. The script becomes of ever-evolving thing. You can't be afraid of making big-idea changes. The things that child of change the concept of the whole movie will sometimes come up three weeks before filming. Once on idea seems good, then you have to do it, and that's what we do or, once on idea seems bad, you have to fix it. I think a lot of people maybe aren't as hard on their stuff. Or, if they are hard on it and see there's a problem, decide not to fix it because they're too close to production or because it's not that of a deal big. We really try to make it where it gets to the point where we can stand behind everything in it with 100 percent confidence. We've tried to punch every get into it that we can. If it holds up, it holds water, as we always say.

Do you have example of that child of 11th hour curveball on "neighbors"?
Pretty far along the road is when we realized that the relationship between my character and my wife actually should be the focal point of the movie. For a long time, it's what about me and my friends, and my wife character what the exact wife character you would expect in a movie like this. Then we realized, "Oh, we re doing the exact stupid fucking thing that everyone does." None of US have relationships with our wives that are like that. We all have fun with our wives, and our wives like to do fun shit, too. We get along with our wives! Once we realized that, it literally changed the entire movie. It became such idea to US on exciting and interesting, that we couldn't reject it. we had to go with it.

You mentioned standing behind everything in a script, and you always seem like a pretty self aware person. Can you anticipate what people want to have problem with before the movies come out?
Yeah, usually. There are some things that we do that there's no. way that some people won't [get upset]. If anything, though, I'm surprised by how much people are willing to go with, and how much we've been able to get away with. Then I'm so surprised when people want to attack US for the stupidest fucking thing. I'm like, 'really?'

In general, or on this movie in particular?
Just in general. It's like, "that's what we're getting attack for?" I read some things where people thought the thing James Franco and I did with the Kanye video what homophobic. To me, that what is ludicrous. We so weren't even viewing it through that lens. It's so funny for someone to project our motivations and comedic intentions with it onto US. But, if anything, I'm pleased with what we're able to get away. We test lot the movies a. It's no mistake that most of the jokes work. Some audiences see versions of our movies that are offensive and do have stuff that should not be in there [laughs]. We just try to filter things out. It's like addition by subtraction a lot of the time. It's just getting rid of the shit that people don't like.

Like what?
Sometimes it's the smallest thing. Like the joke Jason Mantzoukas has in "Neighbors": "your baby has HIV." We first tested it and there what twice as much time between when he says that and when he says the next thing: "Which is how bad this could have been." In the current cut of the movie, it's two seconds. In that other version, it what is four seconds. The difference between the two and four seconds what so vast that it literally ruined the next 20 minutes of the movie. You could feel that we had dug a hole that we had to comedically claw our way out of. People were just like, "What the fuck?" They hated it then the next screening, we were like, "what if we just made it less time?" All of a sudden, it's one of the biggest laughs in the whole movie. That what is surprising. That little difference can allow you to get away with a joke like that.

Did you anticipate that joke would be a problem?
As we filmed that, I what like, "there is no fucking way this wants to be in the movie." Of the two hours we spent filming that scene, we spent 10 minutes doing that joke and hour and 50 minutes doing other jokes. I thought we had to get other shit. I did not think what it going to work. Then it works! It's always thrilling and at times disappointing, what people actually laugh at.

Do you ever shy away from a joke because you think it'll be too controversial?
Lol I think if anything we lean into ideas that we know wants to draw some criticism. We like things that are child of slightly edgy, I guess. Not necessarily safe. Ideas that MediaFusion seem like they wouldn't work.

There are a lot of jokes like that in "Neighbors." IKE Barinholtz gets a huge laugh just by saying rape.
That again is one where I what like, "No." When he did it, I literally laughed for 25 minutes, but I what are not confident that it would play well in a movie theater. Then it did, and you're just like, "Jesus fucking Christ!"

Why do you think that kid of joke works?
Because his character is dumb, and it's not mean spirited. The joke is always how dumb we are. We're never making fun of someone or a group of people or making light of a horrible thing. We're making fun of our perspectives on it. In that case, it's how dumb he would be to suggest that. Some people get that and some people don't totally get that. But, in general, more people get it than I would think.

That's got to be nice for you.
It is nice for me. I'm not hated as much as I feel like I could be. I could be way more hated.

Kim Kardashian And Kanye West Tone It Down For The 2014 Met Gala

It shouldn't be a surprise that Kim Kardashian was one of the most anticipated guests of the 2014 Met Gala.

Last year, Kardashian stepped out beside then-future husband Kanye West, covered in a floral print gown crafted by her designer BFF Riccardo Tisci. But, the dress didn't just stop there -- a major slit in the gown was only a mere detail, as Kim slipped her fingers into matching gloves ... which were attached the the garment. Needless to say, the fashion world and the Internet had a field day.

And of course we can't talk about Mrs. West (!!) without mentioning her hubby, who got a top nod for best dressed by Vogue last year in his Givenchy suit.

So, for this year's red carpet we were kind of shocked to see her pare down her look with a simple Lanvin navy and black gown -- although the slit leaves little to the imagination, as there's been a couple flashes of what seems like a matching set of underwear. As for Kanye, he stays true to his past gala uniform, rocking a fierce jacket tail.

We're loving Kim's elegant look, especially alongside Kanye's dapper outfit.

Kate Upton Goes To The Dark Side For The 2014 Met Gala

Kate Upton has been making lots of headlines lately. Between her acting gig in "The Other Woman" and being the face of just about everything, the supermodel is no stranger to the red carpet.

We're wondering, then, what she was thinking when she slipped into this dark, Frida Khalo-esque Dolce & Gabbanna gown and headdress for the 2014 Met Gala. She looks beautiful, of course, but the corset, the ruffles, the flowers ... it's just a bit too much.

Contentious Obama Nominee Apologizes To Committee For Omitting Details From Past

MICHAEL BOGGS OBAMA JUDICIAL NOMINEE Georgia judicial nominee Michael Boggs, one of President Obama's most controversial picks for the federal bench, apologized to the Senate Judiciary Committee for leaving key details out of his committee paperwork. | ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON -- One of President Barack Obama's most controversial judicial nominees has apologized to the Senate Judiciary Committee for omitting details from his background paperwork, and has submitted new information about his time as a Georgia state legislator -- a period under intense scrutiny from progressive groups.

In an April 10 letter that surfaced Monday, Michael Boggs, a nominee for a U.S. district court judgeship in Georgia, told Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and ranking member Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) that he left out details in his January questionnaire to the committee that he didn't think were necessary or that weren't readily available. Now, Boggs said, he has "located and exhausted new resources" to provide senators with more information about his background.

The 26-page addendum lists bills that Boggs sponsored, and votes he took while serving in the Georgia House from 2000 to 2004. It also cites speeches he'd given. While it's not unusual for a nominee to provide supplemental materials to the committee, it's notable that Boggs provided, in his original paperwork, a lengthy description of the kinds of bills he sponsored as a state legislator but left out contentious legislation on abortion, gay marriage and religious freedom, which appear in his addendum.

Among the bills that Boggs sponsored, but didn't mention in his original paperwork: A constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, legislation to feature the Ten Commandments in all of Georgia's county courthouses, and multiple bills related to abortion, including one that would create "Choose Life" license plates and another that would impose tougher restrictions on minors seeking abortions, even in cases of rape or incest.

"In several instances in my original questionnaire, I omitted detail that I did not believe was responsive, based on the public questionnaires of other judicial nominees who also had served as state legislators, and I would like to apologize for not including this information," Boggs wrote.

A committee aide said Boggs submitted the new materials in response to follow-up questions from committee staff.

Progressive groups have fumed at the president for nominating Boggs. NARAL Pro-Choice America has even launched a campaign to sink his vote. Boggs is part of an all-or-nothing package of six judicial nominees that Obama agreed to last summer with Georgia's Republican senators, Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson. The White House has maintained that the tradeoff for Boggs is that Democratic-backed nominees in the deal will finally advance after years of going nowhere.

Chambliss and Isakson turned in their so-called blue slips to the Senate Judiciary Committee last week, which means Boggs and the other Georgia nominees in the package are cleared for a confirmation hearing. Leahy has yet to schedule a hearing.

Hypnotically Beautiful Map Lets You Stalk Whales Around Hawaii

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Hawaii is practically overrun by humpback whales every October through May when they come from such far-flung places as Russia and Alaska to breed in the shallower and warmer waters. You can hear them sing underwater, watch them splash from the shoreline, and see them snuggle from the air.

But Scot McQueen, the chief strategy officer on GeoEngineers' Smartmine team, wants you to know about the other whales that live and breed in Hawaii. Humpback whales might be the show-stoppers, but Hawaii sees "a lot of different species of whales," he told The Huffington Post, such as false killer or beaked whales. "These whales aren’t that well known, and there is a ton of them that need help right now."

In order to draw attention to these whales in a compelling way, McQueen had his software development team build the Smartmine Whale Tracking Map, which animates the paths of whales using data collected over recent months.

McQueen notes that, as government funding for whale research decreases, "a lot of people need to see what’s going on. It’s not just humpback whales off the coast of Hawaii, or all over world, but all these other whales that people need to understand."

Eighteen species of toothed whales and six baleen whales are known to exist around Hawaii, but until recently, according to Cascadia Research, most studies have focused only on humpbacks and spinner dolphins. Hawaiian odontocetes (or whales with teeth, such as dolphins or sperm whales) face dangers evident in waters with human traffic, such as hook ingestion, Navy sonar pollution, and net entanglements.

The idea behind the map is, according to McQueen, that if it engages people with all the varieties of whales in a meaningful way, "from that consciousness rises new opportunities all the time."

The map isn't in real-time, but based on recent data collected by Dr. Robin Baird of Washington's Cascadia Research, who tags and studies the behaviors of Hawaiian odontocetes.

With the Van Goghian lines of the wind currents and ocean swirls (using data culled from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), the map is a hypnotic way to stalk your favorite whale -- and it sure beats getting slapped by one.
